The Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) is a multi-division exam used to assess your knowledge and skills regarding the practice of architecture. The current version of the exam, ARE 5.0, is developed by NCARB and features six divisions. Completing ARE 5.0 by passing all six divisions is required by all U.S. jurisdictions as a key step on the path to earning a license.
The PE Architectural Engineering exam is computer-based and administered one day per year. Like other PE exams with small examinee populations, this is a single-day testing event similar to the current pencil-and-paper exams. Examinees may reserve their seats up to a year in advance at a Pearson VUE test center once they are registered with NCEES and approved by their board. Candidates are encouraged to reserve their seat for this single-day event as early as possible.
The FE exam is generally your first step in the process of becoming a licensed professional engineer (P.E.). It is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. The FE exam is a computer-based exam administered year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers. A $175 exam fee is payable directly to NCEES.
What are some entrance exams for engineering or architecture students in the USA?
Engineering students in the United States take the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or the American College Testing (ACT) as entrance exams. Some of them may also be admitted because of the Advanced Placement (AP) course exams. These tests are the standard exams that undergraduate engineering programs use to determine the qualification of the applicants. They rely heavily on these entrance exams to select the best among them deemed prepared enough to engage in engineering programs, complete them successfully and graduate. These are the entrance exams most college students from all fields have to take in order to be admitted into college. Engineering schools in the U.S. do not have specific entrance exams that distinguish them from other schools.
Graduate students in engineering also take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as entrance exams. Like the undergraduate programs, the graduate engineering ones also do not have special entrance exams. They follow the same process as all graduate schools in the selection and admission of their candidates. Regardless of their degree level, engineering students are expected to have very good quantitative and analytical skills.
